Decades may have passed since ABC’s iconic “Love in the Afternoon” campaign, but the network continues to offer romance and intrigue on the current longest-running daytime drama, “General Hospital.” In the past year, a certain couple has captured the hearts of many. It’s none other than Dr. Portia Robinson (Brook Kerr) and Dr. Isaiah Gannon (Sawandi Wilson).

Beginning in mystery, evolving into a professional connection that turned into friendship and finally blooming into an us-against-the-world romance, this pairing quickly drew comparisons to the soap opera’s reigning doctor power couple, earning the fan-created nickname “Black Scrubs.”

Dr. Robinson and Dr. Gannon’s slow-burn path to trust, temptation, heartbreak, healing and ultimately steady, mutual devotion has created a layered love story entirely their own. Weighed down by a marriage mired in mistrust and other obstacles, Dr. Robinson increasingly turned to her colleague for comfort. Dr. Gannon was the only one who noticed the heroine’s troubles, and the 2025 Nurses Ball marked the first time he reached out as a willing confidant.

Even with her walls up, Dr. Robinson found space for emotional vulnerability with the transplant surgeon as he continued to help her through personal and professional struggles without judgment. The renowned doctors were able to find solace in each other.

Lingering touches and stolen, impassioned looks soon gave way to a forbidden attraction. After a final spousal confrontation freed the beleaguered wife from continued drama with Curtis Ashford, Dr. Robinson ran straight into the arms of her safe place.

After Dr. Gannon helped the former General Hospital chief of staff take off her wedding ring, the medical duo made love for the first time. It wasn’t long before they decided to keep exploring their growing connection.

Trial by Fire

Despite many complications, including the remaining legality of a marriage, an entanglement between a superior and subordinate, increased scrutiny and secrecy, the lovers continued strengthening their bond. When Dr. Robinson was forced to publicly reveal her new relationship while on the witness stand in Congresswoman Willow Cain’s (Katelyn MacMullen) criminal trial, Dr. Gannon was ready to help her face the fallout.

The transplant surgeon consistently proved himself a knight in shining armor, offering continued affection and understanding even as the woman he loves found herself ostracized by her family and friends.

Love in the Lab Results

In classic soap opera fashion, a “who’s-the-daddy?” pregnancy twist quickly positioned itself as the next obstacle for “Black Scrubs.” Even when the paternity test named Curtis Ashford as the father of Dr. Robinson’s unborn child, Dr. Gannon only further cemented himself as a long-haul romantic lead. Fans swooned as he continued to ease the second-time mother’s fears, shower her with affection and keep promises to be there for her.

Proving that love is healing when it’s unconditional, this pairing has withstood Portia Robinson’s divorce, the anger of her daughter, Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali), and continued antipathy from the now romantically reunited Curtis and Jordan Ashford.

Even when the Aurora Media CEO’s escalating resentment put a target on Dr. Gannon’s back, the couple chose each other with open eyes and hearts. Not even an assault paired with a potentially career-ending injury could dim the mutual dedication between “Black Scrubs.”

With baby Desmond Robinson-Ashford’s arrival into the world and Curtis Ashford’s assault trial and conviction behind them, Portia Robinson and Isaiah Gannon seem ready to enter the next phase of their life together.
