In the wake of heavy, devastating and heartbreaking storylines, the performers who make up the soap opera world get to show off their chops, eliciting strong emotions that move viewers. That’s what “Days of Our Lives” star actress Raven Bowens has done for me.

Bowens’ performances as Chanel Dupree-DiMera during the week of June 1 have been simply touching. I have always admired Bowens, but I truly believe she’s shown a masterclass in acting, not only learning about her cancer diagnosis but also advocating for herself to her inconsiderate oncologist, Dr. George (John Hartmann).

It was incredibly difficult to watch Dupree-DiMera find out that her biopsy results revealed a tumor growing aggressively, especially given that she’s already experiencing a high-risk pregnancy and would have to go through treatment as she hopes to bring her baby into the world. This is also coming off a miscarriage of her first child with her husband, Johnny DiMera (Carson Boatman).

Dr. Sarah Horton (Linsey Godfrey) gently broke the news to Dupree-DiMera in May, outlining some of her options and emphasizing that her health as the mother was crucial to the baby’s health.

Given the weight of this story, I expected Bowens to conquer the material, and she has absolutely delivered. Witnessing this arc play out from the beginning to now has been poignant and heart-wrenching.

From Dupree-DiMera’s initial worry to getting the diagnosis, figuring out a treatment plan and working through the need to be strong while going through such a horrifying battle, it’s been an authentic journey. The important beats have been portrayed to perfection, making me yearn for an outcome where Dupree-DiMera makes it through and comes out stronger and healthier on the other side.

Bowens’ depiction of Dupree-DiMera’s desire for an adequate course of action and advocacy for herself as a Black woman was fantastic work, and the scenes were very well written. I especially appreciated the struggles Black cancer patients experience being spotlighted with care.

Dupree-DiMera proudly and assertively reminded her oncologist that she is a wife, a businesswoman, a mother and a person, not just another statistic for him to add to his success rates. She also educated the doctor about implicit bias and the discrepancies within the mortality rate of Black female cancer patients compared to White patients, which was powerful.

Although I will continue to hope for continued and consistent screen time for Dupree-DiMera, the moments she has had have been so impactful. We’ve seen the Sweet Bits Bakery owner attempting to stay strong in front of Johnny DiMera, but then her mood visibly changes after he leaves.

Dupree-DiMera’s heart-to-heart with her mother, Paulina Price-Carver (Jackée Harry), has highlighted her worries about being a good mom while balancing treatment and being there for her family. The fear of not being able to be an ongoing presence for her kids due to chemotherapy and its side effects brought me to tears.

Since her debut in July 2021, we’ve seen Bowens portray her alter ego’s triumphs, heartbreaks, successes and adversity with a keen sense of attention to detail. She has consistently elevated the material she has been given with her talent and charisma. This is no different.

With this hard-hitting topic, Bowens has displayed her range and brought to life a real-life hardship that so many people around the world experience with the thoughtfulness it deserves. I am very excited to see what lies ahead for Dupree-DiMera and her family as they keep navigating this chapter.
