“Beyond the Gates” has completed its first trip around the sun since its 2025 Premiere. The fresh daytime drama series took the world by storm and became the first soap opera in over 30 years to have a predominately Black cast. NBC’s “Generations” preceded it.

The hit show is also the first hour-long soap opera ever to be Black-led. Set primarily in the DMV area, highlighting the prestigious fictional gated community of Fairmont Crest, “Beyond the Gates,” has showcased stories centered on the prominent Dupree family, whose power and influence span multiple generations.

In the first episode, viewers met Dupree matriarch Anita Dupree. Anita Dupree is an EGOT winner and lead singer of the former girl group, The Articulettes. She is portrayed by former “As the World Turns” actress Tamara Tunie. The patriarch, Vernon Dupree, is a former U.S. Senator and civil rights activist, played by Clifton Davis, singer and former “Amen” actor.

Their legendary family history extends even further. Vernon Dupree’s father, Paul Cheeks Dupree, was an architect who founded the exclusive, gated community in the Maryland suburbs, building the first houses there.

Anita and Vernon Dupree built a family after meeting at a civil rights march in Washington, D.C., where The Articulettes were performing. The power couple had two daughters, Dr. Nicole Dupree, portrayed by former “Passions” actress Daphnée Duplaix, and Dani Dupree, portrayed by former “The Bold and the Beautiful” actress Karla Mosley.

Eldest daughter Nicole Dupree married plastic surgeon Dr. Ted Richardson (Keith Robinson). They had a son, Martin Richardson (Brandon Claybon), and a daughter, Katherine “Kat” Richardson (Colby Natasha Nixon).

Dani Dupree, supermodel and certified “wild-child,” married criminal defense attorney William “Bill” Hamilton (Timon Kyle Durrett). They are the parents of two daughters: Chelsea Hamilton (RhonniRose Mantilla) and Naomi Hamilton-Hawthorne (Arielle Prepetit).

This wealthy family, seemingly idyllic and unblemished, would later reveal to be laced with betrayal, secrets and scandals involving other major players on canvas.

When CBS Studios, P&G Studios and the NAACP joined forces, the dreams of Beyond The Gates executive producer Sheila Ducksworth and executive producer, creator and showrunner Michele Val Jean came true.

After pitching the show in 2020, Ducksworth, who also serves as the President of the CBS/NAACP Venture, reached out to Val Jean. Val Jean had written for the soaps “Generations,” “General Hospital,” “Santa Barbara” and “The Bold and the Beautiful.” With her concept, what started as a vision became reality when the series aired in February 2025.

“I think for people around all corners of the world to see that this is yet another look at Black life in America, I think it’s going to be important,” Ducksworth told People Magazine ahead of the premiere. “It’s highly aspirational, yet attainable, and that’s what we want to put on display.”

Originally titled “The Gates,” the soap was first ordered and announced in early 2024. The table read was held on Oct. 30, 2024, and production began right after in November, filming at Assembly Studios in Georgia.

“I’ve been living with this world in my head,” Val Jean said in the Beyond The Gates Historic Start of Production preview. “I got here, and there were faces to the characters, sets, clothes and so much hair.”

With this series, representation isn’t limited to what’s on screen, and the production has been widely noted for employing diverse talent behind the scenes.

Executive producers Julie Carruthers, Leon W. Russell, Derrick Johnson, Kimberly Doebereiner, Anna Saalfeld and formerly, Robert Guza Jr. also helped bring this historic series to life, along with a strong writing and directing team.

Daytime Emmy-winning costume designer Jeresa Featherstone, formerly of B&B, joined the team alongside makeup artists Stevie Martin and Ree’se, as well as hairstylists Christy Miller and Wankaya Hinkson. They’ve created epic fashion statements for each character and magnified their beauty.

Daytime drama has always thrived on powerful dynasties, and the Duprees became its bold new blueprint. They represent something long overdue in daytime television: a rich, complex and ambitious Black family centered not solely on struggling, but on romance, strength and legacy.

Ducksworth and Val Jean were able to build a soap that respects the genre’s traditions while modernizing its lens. The storytelling is classic, but the cultural perspective is current, intentional and expansive.

Year one of “Beyond The Gates” brought a secret love child and a sibling rivalry. It featured a crazy stalker, a self-defense cover-up and a heartbreaking cancer diagnosis, with a side of love, mob ties and shotgun weddings—both literally and figuratively—and much more.

This soap opera is already making waves. It has been nominated at the 2026 Writers Guild Awards in the daytime drama category and has also received an “Outstanding Drama Series” nomination at the 57th NAACP Image Awards, taking place on Feb. 28, 2026.

With a Season 2 renewal already secured, there are many more stories to be told, including a multi-episode crossover with six residents from “The Young and the Restless,” an onscreen cotillion and an Easter episode that’ll welcome a Grammy-winning special guest.

Television both reflects and shapes culture. For decades, soap operas built fictional dynasties that defined glamour and power in the American imagination. Now, with “Beyond the Gates,” that dynasty finally looks more like the country itself—and that’s what makes this show historic.
